When we had our home inspection, we were advised that we should get a professional in to inspect the furnace. (We knew it was old, but was in working condition.) We had so much going on, that we didn’t do that for a few months. But in the meantime we didn’t really run the furnace at all because the weather was warm enough.
Another surprise for us when the summer came was that the air conditioner was broken. When we were buying the house we were told that it was just serviced and in working order. Not true! So what got us moving on this project was the summer months that became pretty hot without air conditioning.
So in mid-July we got a brand new air conditioner and furnace. Good thing, because when the HVAC guy removed our old furnace, he pointed out to us the giant crack that was in the heat exchanger. Which was likely leaking carbon monoxide! So thank goodness we hadn’t used the furnace really at all!!! We wouldn’t have been able to see this crack ourselves because you can’t typically see the heat exchanger without a professional inspection. But once apart, it’s certainly quite visible! Yikes!
But all is well. No carbon monoxide poisoning for us. And look at our brand new shiny furnace!
